Hollywood movie star Joseph Gordon-Levitt debuted his collaborative project “Lost in Taiwan” on Facebook on Friday, saying, with a Taiwanese flag emoji, that he was “blown away and deeply touched” by Taiwanese social media users’ enthusiasm.

Gordon Levitt had previously asked Taiwanese social media users for pictures and videos that best showcased Taiwan for his platform hitRECord.

Gordon-Levitt explained that the project featured “writing, photography, video, music and voice acting from more than 150 contributors.”

“This script began as a simple prompt to finish this sentence: ‘When I think of Taiwan, I think of ________’, Gordon-Levitt wrote.

“I’ve been blown away and deeply touched by your enthusiasm for this project, and I wanted to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who participated. Your creativity and talent are inspiring,” Gordon-Levitt wrote.

In the two-and-half-minute-long video, some mentioned temples and incense, sitting on scooters and feeling the wind on their faces and convenience stores that are never more than a few steps away.

Others said that when they think of Taiwan, they think of democracy and freedom, putting special emphasis on Taiwanese citizens’ active political participation.

Near the end of the video, a narrator can be heard saying: “Most of all, I think of Taiwan as part of who I am. A land of free will, a land of young minds, a land that embraces humanity, a land that I call home.”
