Have you ever seen these mural paintings in elementary schools in Hsinchu, Taitung and Hualien County? They were the artworks of Julien Seth Malland, a French street artist who is known for the use of bold colors. Malland incorporated the local features into his works in the hope of helping promote local indigenous culture.
Since 2003, Malland has traveled around the world. Whenever he arrives in a new place, he tries to get to know the local culture to find inspiration and turned it into street art.
Invited by Nippon Paint, Malland joined the project “Color, Way of Love” in 2015. Inspired by the indigenous culture, Malland had painted on the walls in three elementary schools in Taiwan: Hsinchu Jinping Elementary School, Hualien Ruimei Elementary School and Taitung Wanan Elementary School.
The mural painting in Jinping school centers on the “Rainbow Bridge,” a legend of Taiwan’s indigenous group, Atayal. The painting depicts two children — one in a modern outfit and the other one in indigenous clothing — jointly holding the rainbow. The image symbolizes the coexistence of the old and new culture.
A painted wall in the branch of Taitung Wanan Elementary School in Cishang towship, features a girl in an indigenous outfit sitting on the “real” bush (in front of the wall) and gazing into the distance. Behind the girl, there is a boy in modern clothes carrying a bag with Amis totem, which relates to the idea of preserving the traditional culture.
In Hualien, the mural painting on the wall in Ruimei is a joint work of Malland and the students in the school.
